Flugel Horn    Melissa Maddison
Melissa, who also plays Cornet or Trumpet, joined the Band in August 2006 prior to the National Finals contest at the Royal Albert Hall and established herself very quickly, making a very confident and comfortable move to the Flugel position.  Melissa completed her Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Degree in Music studies at Leeds College of Music in 2006 with a 2.1 Hons Degree, on Cornet and Trumpet.

Melissa is the daughter of Tommy Maddison, himself a renowned Cornet and Flugel Player with Easington, Ever Ready and Durham Constabulary Bands, and also Conductor with Peterlee and Ferryhill bands.  Melissa therefore naturally started playing Cornet, and more recently Flugel, due to her fathers influence.

Melissa played for Peterlee band from 1995 to 2001, moving from 3rd Cornet to Assistant Principal cornet. During that time, she also played for Spennymoor Youth Band in 1998, sitting Principal Cornet at the tender age of 14 and toured Holland and Belgium with the Band, whilst also entering several youth band competitions.

Melissa began playing Trumpet whilst studying for her A Level, and has also gained Grade 8 for Cornet and Trumpet.  She played for several Brass Bands and Orchestras during her university years, including Wetherby Silver band, the College Chamber and Symphony Orchestras and the Airedale Symphony Orchestra.

Whilst at Leeds, she was awarded the Laura Rees prize for Orchestral Brass 3 years running.  The highlight of her playing career whilst at College was performing the Haydn Trumpet Concerto with the Leeds College of Music Chamber Orchestra.  However, she states that her proudest and most memorable performing achievement is playing at the Royal Albert Hall on Flugel in her first contest with the band.   An "amazing" experience !

Melissa is now embarking on a teaching career, specialising in instrumental teaching both privately and at schools in Newcastle and Sunderland.  She is planning to begin her PGCE soon also.

Melissa states that she is looking forward to an enjoyable and successful future with Fishburn Band. We're all in agreement there Melissa!
