XMAS CAROLS

It all seems rather early, but we have already started shaking the carol tins in the start of our new Xmas Carol playing campaign in Sunderland Shopping Centre.  If you see a poor Bandsman shaking a tin, please take pity and make his or her time worthwhile!

SCOTTISH OPEN CONTEST

Well, it's back to the grind with getting up to speed on our chosen test piece for the Scottish Open, 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth'  This is a very difficult but enjoyable piece.  We are once again being taken by the excellent Alan Morrison, who is currently putting the band through their paces.  Sccotland has always been a happy hunting ground for the Band, having many of our best results there.  Let's hope that we can match our expectations once again!

HOLIDAY SEASON

The holiday season is now drawing to a close and we can shake off the cobwebs and get back into full swing ready for our forthcoming concerts and contests.

Prior to the holidays, we had a very enjoyable concert at Fishburn Club (10 July) followed by Durham Miners Gala (11 July) and a further concert at Whitby Spa (19 July) which was well received by an appreciative audience which set us up nicely for the break.

We are now rehearsing for our joint concert with Murton Band and SverreSigurdsons Musikkorps Band, (Norway) at Elvet Church, Durham (4 September) and a Concert in support of Cancer Research at Spennymoor Town hall (5 September), all followed by Stokesley Show (19 September), so a very busy period ahead!.

Once we've drawn breath, we will then prepare for  the Scottish Open Contest (28 November) where we will be playing Journey to the Centre of the earth as our own choice selection test piece.

89th SPRING FESTIVAL - SENIOR CUP

The Band played Pageantry by Herbert Howells at this years Senior Cup in the Winter Gardens, Blackpool under the expert Direction of Alan Morrison who gave an excellent reading of the piece.  Whilst the Band were awarded a very respectable 5th place out of 20 Bands, we unfortunately just missed out on qualification to the Grand Shield 2010 by one place.  The result does mean however that we are eligible once again for the Senior Cup 2010 where we will again bid to qualify for a return to the Grand Shield.  Many thanks to our guest players who did us proud.  Those who haven't already signed - the transfer forms are at the ready!!!

NORTHERN AREA CONTEST

We were obviously very disappointed in only achieving 4th place in the area contest on 22nd March.  Garry Cutt and Phil Rosier both worked very hard in presenting an excellent reading of Salute to Youth on which Garry had won on in other area's.  Whilst it was a good performance, too many unforced errors proved costly.  Good luck to EYMS and Reg Vardy on qualifying for London Finals, do the North proud!   We will learn from the experience and ensure that even more effort is put in to bring us the success we want.

NORTHERN AREA CONTEST

We are very privileged that Garry Cutt will be taking us to the area contest on Gilbert Vinters excellent 'Salute to Youth' and we will be doing our utmost to get the result we deserve to qualify for the National Finals at the Royal Albert Hall, London in October.  Garry has already qualified for the Finals with Fodens in the North West area, so we have a winning interpretation to look forward to.  Prior to Garry arriving, we are also very pleased to welcome back Alan Morrison to do some preparation work with the Band.

SAGE CONCERT, GATESHEAD

We had a very full day of rehearsals and massed bands concert with soloist at the spectacular 'Sage' in Gateshead on Sunday 15 February 2009 under the Musical Direction of Ray Farr and the winner of this year’s European Conductor’s Competition, Mathias Wehr from Germany, as guest conductor. There was an excellent turn out of around 1,500 enthusiastic patrons at the concert which set the scene for a most enjoyable event.  The Euphonium Soloist, David Childs of the Cory Band, was in brilliant form making his extremely difficult solo's sound easy.  Ray was also at his best and had the audience enthralled.  The bands taking part where Fishburn Band, Reg Vardy Band, Wansbeck’s Ashington Colliery Band and the Northern Youth Brass band who all played with precision and style.

The concert included such pieces as ‘Light Cavalry’, ‘Great Gate of Kiev’, ‘Air from Suite in D’, ‘Salute to Youth’ and ‘Blaydon Races’.

NORTH WEST COUNTIES BRASS BAND ASSOCIATION CONTEST

We were very happy with our performance of Lowry Sketchbook, our own choice test piece at the 'Brass at The Guild' Contest, Preston on Sunday 8 February.  Whilst we didn't get the position we believe we deserved, this was a very creditable showing on a very difficult piece which received good comments from the Adjudicator, John Berryman.

The Band were lead by our resident MD Phil Rosier who worked hard with the Band during a busy period interlaced with other events including preparation for Master classes and concerts.

Thanks go to our guests on the day, Jillian, Tom, Anthony and Andy who gave us their all.
